their interrelation with life, society and the environment. It has and is still playing a massive role for mankind. Over the years, decades and centuries, technology has greatly evolved and is still evolving. Some persons say it's for the better, others say otherwise. Well, being an optimist I know where I stand and I'd like to point out a few out of the numerous areas where technology has helped mankind.
1. Livelihoods - In the 21st century, being computer literate can get you a job or help you start a business and provide income for yourself and your family. Now when I say computer literate I don't just mean knowing how to use word processing applications, there's competition everywhere, you have to know more than that to give you an edge.
2. Education - Access to technology, on-line resources, multimedia, collaborative learning all enhance the experience of learning. Talking about this I really love what Khan Academy is doing. It's a site that everyone interested in learning should bookmark.
3. Social Justice - On-line technology has helped people communicate to a wider audience the injustices, and abuse of human rights affecting their lives. An example is the ongoing unrest in Syria and Egypt.
4. Health - The power of technology has been used to tackle health issues, and more is still being done in this area. In Kenya, Hewlett Packard provided a technology that can diagnose babies with HIV/AIDS in 1 day instead of the 3 months previously required. That's great news!
5. Democracy - The ability to use technology to communicate and organise civil society was an important catalyst for change among repressed people across the Arab world. Twitter, facebook, mobile phones where used to organise people and garner support from the international community.
I know in one way or the other technology has helped you, cos it has really helped me.
